Flooding in Nadi has been a persistent issue for successive governments since the 1970s, with challenges related to waste management still unresolved. Opposition Member of Parliament Faiyaz Koya raised this concern during a debate in Parliament on Monday, discussing the Nadi Town Council’s Review Report.
Koya pointed out that poor refuse collection remains one of the council’s most significant problems. “It has been an ongoing issue for many, many years,” he stated, emphasizing that unlike other towns in Fiji, Nadi Town lacks a proper waste disposal system.
He noted that while the report indicates efforts to establish a waste collection site, the problem has persisted for too long. “We must view this as an opportunity,” he remarked, suggesting that it could lead to discussions about recycling and better environmental practices.
In recognition of the council’s efforts, Koya praised the Nadi Town Council for successfully collecting 92 percent of its town rates, leaving only 8 percent in arrears for the year. He highlighted the municipality’s growth, especially with developments extending from the airport to Denarau, making it distinct from other areas in Fiji.
