The Cabinet has reviewed the findings of the Alternative Options Assessment Report regarding the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project. This report was conducted by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.
Several ministries, including Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Agriculture and Waterways, Lands and Mineral Resources, Local Government, and the Nadi Town Council, are set to explore various funding and implementation strategies for the project.
The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project aims to enhance flood prevention measures and decrease flood risks by constructing essential infrastructure such as drainage systems, embankments, and reservoirs for Nadi town, which is situated near the lower reaches of the Nadi River.
This initiative has gone through multiple phases of planning and conceptual designs over the years, focusing on both structural and non-structural flood mitigation strategies for the Nadi River basin.
Being the largest climate resilience project in Fiji, it is expected to mitigate economic and social impacts resulting from flooding, especially since Nadi serves as a crucial hub in the tourism sector and is a vital gateway for the country.
The project complements the initiatives aimed at improving disaster risk resilience as outlined in the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.
This ambitious undertaking not only addresses immediate flood risks but also represents Fiji’s proactive approach towards building a sustainable future in the face of climate change. It highlights a commitment to safeguarding communities while fostering economic stability in the tourism sector.
