The Cabinet has reviewed the findings from the Alternative Options Assessment Report concerning the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, which was carried out by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.

Several government bodies, including the Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics Ministry, the Agriculture and Waterways Ministry, the Lands and Mineral Resources Ministry, the Local Government Ministry, and the Nadi Town Council, will collaborate to explore both funding and implementation strategies for this significant project.

The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project aims to enhance flood prevention measures and reduce flood risks by constructing vital infrastructure such as drainage systems, embankments, and reservoirs for Nadi town, situated at the lower reaches of the Nadi River. This initiative is critical as Nadi plays a key role in Fiji’s tourism sector and serves as a major gateway to the country.

The project has progressed through various phases of planning and design over the years, presenting both structural and non-structural flood mitigation strategies tailored for the Nadi River basin. It is recognized as Fiji’s largest climate resilience initiative, aimed at minimizing economic and social losses resulting from flooding.

Furthermore, the project aligns with broader disaster risk resilience efforts as highlighted in the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.

In a hopeful perspective, the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project reflects Fiji’s commitment to building a sustainable future, protecting both its economy and the well-being of its communities while actively responding to climate change challenges. This emphasizes the government’s proactive approach to safeguarding vital sectors and improving infrastructure resilience for generations to come.
