The Cabinet has reviewed the findings from the Alternative Options Assessment Report regarding the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, which has been carried out by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific. The involved ministries, including Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Agriculture and Waterways, Lands and Mineral Resources, Local Government, and the Nadi Town Council, will proceed with exploring funding sources and implementation strategies for the project.
This initiative aims to bolster flood prevention efforts and minimize flood risks by establishing essential infrastructure such as drainage systems, embankments, and a reservoir in Nadi, which lies in the lower section of the Nadi River. Over the years, the project has gone through multiple planning phases and design concepts, focusing on implementing both structural and non-structural flood mitigation strategies for the Nadi River basin.
The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project stands out as Fiji’s most significant climate resilience initiative, designed to mitigate economic and social impacts on the region, especially given Nadi’s pivotal position in the tourism industry and its role as a primary entry point for Fiji internationally. Furthermore, this project aligns with national disaster risk resilience strategies outlined in the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050, collectively underscoring the commitment toward a more resilient future.
This project represents a proactive approach to addressing climate challenges, not only enhancing infrastructure but also securing economic stability and safety for the communities in and around Nadi. With comprehensive planning and collaboration among various ministries, there is hope for significant progress in disaster risk management in the region.
