The Cabinet has reviewed the Alternative Options Assessment Report regarding the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, which is supported by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific. Several ministries, including Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Agriculture and Waterways, Lands and Mineral Resources, Local Government, and the Nadi Town Council, will look into funding and strategies for implementing the project.

The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project aims to enhance flood prevention capabilities and diminish flood risks in Nadi, focusing on the construction of critical infrastructure such as drainage systems, embankments, and reservoirs in the lower Nadi River area. Over the years, the project has gone through various planning stages and has developed a set of structural and non-structural flood mitigation measures tailored for the Nadi River basin.

As the most extensive climate resilience initiative in Fiji, this project is designed to mitigate economic and social losses, particularly given Nadi’s importance to the tourism sector as a key gateway for the country. Moreover, the project aligns with the disaster risk resilience objectives outlined in the National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and the overarching Vision 2050.

This project is a significant step toward safeguarding the community and the local economy from the adverse effects of flooding, showcasing a proactive approach to climate resilience and disaster management. It reflects the commitment of various government bodies to protect the future of Nadi and its residents while ensuring their safety and sustainability.

In summary, the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project represents a comprehensive response to environmental challenges. By prioritizing flood risk management, this initiative not only seeks to protect infrastructure and livelihoods but also aims to strengthen the region’s resilience against climate change impacts, ultimately fostering a safer and more sustainable future for the community.
