The Cabinet has reviewed the findings from the Alternative Options Assessment Report regarding the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, conducted by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific. Various ministries, including Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Agriculture and Waterways, Lands and Mineral Resources, Local Government, and the Nadi Town Council, will collaborate to explore funding and implementation strategies for the initiative.

This project is designed to enhance flood prevention measures in Nadi by constructing vital infrastructure such as drainage systems, embankments, and reservoirs, particularly benefiting areas in the lower reaches of the Nadi River. Over the years, the project has involved extensive planning and development of both structural and non-structural flood mitigation strategies for the Nadi River basin.

As the largest climate resilience effort in Fiji, the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project aims to minimize economic and social impacts resulting from flooding, crucial for Nadi’s role in the tourism sector and as a gateway for Fiji’s international connections. The initiative also aligns with the national disaster risk resilience goals outlined in the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.

This project not only addresses immediate environmental and economic concerns but also demonstrates a long-term commitment to sustainable development and resilience against climate change. It reflects a proactive approach to safeguarding communities and enhancing their livelihoods.

In summary, the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project is a significant step toward enhancing climate resilience in Fiji while ensuring the protection of vital infrastructure and the economy. The collaborative efforts among various governmental bodies show a united front in tackling the challenges posed by flooding.
