The Cabinet has reviewed the findings from the Alternative Options Assessment Report concerning the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, which was prepared by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.

The ministries involved—including Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Agriculture and Waterways, Lands and Mineral Resources, and Local Government, alongside the Nadi Town Council—are set to investigate funding and implementation options for the project.

The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project aims to enhance flood prevention strategies and mitigate flood risks by constructing essential infrastructure such as drainage systems, embankments, and reservoirs in Nadi town, which is situated in the lower regions of the Nadi River.

This initiative has gone through various phases of planning and design over the years, focusing on both structural and non-structural flood mitigation measures within the Nadi River basin.

Recognized as Fiji’s largest climate resilience initiative, the project is expected to significantly decrease economic and social losses, bolstering the crucial role Nadi plays in the tourism sector as a major gateway for the nation.

Additionally, the project aligns with Fiji’s comprehensive disaster risk resilience goals as articulated in the National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.

The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project not only demonstrates a commitment to improving infrastructure and community safety but also reflects Fiji’s proactive approach towards climate resilience and sustainable development. This initiative is a hopeful step towards safeguarding the future of Nadi and its vital economic contributions.

In summary, the Cabinet’s review of the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project signifies a collaborative effort among various ministries to reinforce flood defenses and enhance resilience against climate impacts, ultimately fostering economic stability and sustainability for Fiji.
