The Cabinet has reviewed the Alternative Options Assessment Report regarding the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, which was conducted by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.
Various ministries including Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Agriculture and Waterways, Lands and Mineral Resources, Local Government, and representatives from the Nadi Town Council are collaborating to explore funding and implementation strategies for the project.
The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project aims to reinforce flood prevention strategies and mitigate flood risks in Nadi, particularly by developing essential infrastructure such as drainage systems, embankments, and reservoirs along the lower reaches of the Nadi River.
Over the years, the project has undergone multiple phases of planning, focusing on both structural and non-structural flood mitigation measures to address challenges in the Nadi River basin.
This initiative represents Fiji’s largest climate resilience effort and is crucial in minimizing economic and social impacts, especially given Nadi’s significance as a major tourism hub and gateway for the country.
Moreover, the project aligns with the broader disaster risk resilience strategies outlined in Fiji’s National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and the long-term Vision 2050.
In summary, the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project not only aims to safeguard the community from flooding but also strengthens the nation’s commitment to sustainability and resilience in the face of climate change, showcasing a proactive approach to disaster management and economic stability. This collaborative effort is a positive step towards building a safer and more resilient future for all residents.
