The Cabinet has reviewed the Alternative Options Assessment Report regarding the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, which was completed by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific. Various government bodies, including the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, and the Nadi Town Council, will collaborate to explore funding and implementation strategies for this significant initiative.
The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project is designed to enhance flood prevention efforts and minimize flood risks through the construction of key infrastructure such as drainage systems, embankments, and a reservoir in Nadi, situated at the lower reaches of the Nadi River. Over the years, the project has progressed through several planning stages, focusing on both structural and non-structural flood mitigation measures for the Nadi River basin.
This initiative is recognized as Fiji’s largest climate resilience project, which aims to curtail economic and social damages associated with flooding. Given Nadi’s vital role in the tourism industry as a primary gateway for Fiji, the project’s success is crucial for the nation’s economy. Furthermore, the project aligns with disaster risk resilience strategies outlined in Fiji’s National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection.
Overall, the efforts surrounding the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project highlight an important step towards improving community resilience and safeguarding lives and livelihoods in the face of climate change. The collaboration among various ministries and the alignment with national goals provide a solid foundation for effectively addressing the challenges posed by flooding in the region.
