The Cabinet has reviewed the findings of the Alternative Options Assessment Report concerning the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, conducted by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.
Key ministries, including Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Agriculture and Waterways, Lands and Mineral Resources, Local Government, and the Nadi Town Council, will work together to explore potential funding and implementation strategies for this important project.
The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project aims to enhance flood prevention efforts and minimize flood risks in Nadi, specifically through the construction of drainage facilities, embankments, and reservoirs, particularly along the lower reaches of the Nadi River. This initiative has progressed through various planning stages and designs over the years, focusing on both structural and non-structural flood mitigation measures suitable for the Nadi River basin.
This project represents Fiji’s largest commitment to climate resilience, aiming to curtail economic and social losses associated with flooding, especially given Nadi’s crucial role as a hub for tourism and a primary entry point to Fiji. Furthermore, it aligns with the disaster risk resilience strategies outlined in the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.
In summary, the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project is a significant step towards enhancing climate resilience in Fiji, which will not only safeguard Nadi’s local community but also support the country’s broader economic stability through improved disaster management.
This project reflects a positive commitment by the Fijian government to safeguard its citizens and infrastructure against the challenges posed by climate change, thereby fostering hope for a more resilient future.
