Business owners in Nadi Town are grappling with a troubling situation in the aftermath of recent flooding, which not only damaged their stores but also left them dealing with human waste found in shop corridors. This issue is believed to be linked to individuals with mental health challenges who have been using these areas as temporary shelter.

Bobby Janendra Vikash, the proprietor of Mega Paper Supplies, voiced his concerns, highlighting that the responsibility for cleaning up the mess fell on shop owners rather than the Nadi Town Council. He noted that following the flood, human feces were found scattered throughout the main street and around his business, creating an unbearable stench.

Saliceni Raiwalui, the Special Administrator of the council, acknowledged that the problem is longstanding and requires collaboration among various stakeholders. Although efforts have been made to take street individuals to shelters or treatment centers, many continue to return to the streets. Mr. Raiwalui suggested that stricter measures could be necessary to manage the situation, advocating for consequences against those who persist in leaving waste in public areas.

Mr. Vikash, who is also an advisory councillor and chairman of Nadi district, pointed out the connection between flooding and littering, blaming debris for obstructed drains that exacerbate flood conditions. He proposed that the Ministry of Health and Environment assign littering enforcement officers to ensure public cleanliness and accountability.
