The Yavusania Retrofitted Evacuation Centre in Nadi was officially inaugurated this week. This project received funding from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and was carried out by IOM Fiji in collaboration with the Fiji National Disaster Management Office and Save the Children.

During the commissioning ceremony, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, expressed appreciation to KOICA, IOM, and Save the Children Fiji for their partnership with the Ministry and Fiji NDMO to achieve this significant milestone. He emphasized the government’s dedication to enhancing resilience against the threats posed by climate change.

KOICA’s country director, Hankyulsam Cho, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to ensuring that Fijian communities are resilient, empowered, and prepared for future challenges. Cho stated, “With strengthened capacities, solid partnerships, and the unwavering resilience of the Fijian people, I am confident that we will continue to build a safer and more secure future for all.” She also thanked the Government of Fiji, IOM, and all stakeholders involved in bringing the project to completion.

The newly established facility, which cost $203,250, will provide vital protection for vulnerable groups during emergencies. It will also function as a central meeting point for the community, bolstering resilience and promoting long-term safety.
