Nadi Town is currently experiencing a transformative shift as its main street transitions back to two-way traffic, a change that has generated enthusiasm among residents and business owners alike. This decision aims to alleviate congestion and enhance accessibility, benefits that many in the community are eager to realize.

Local business owners, like Mohammed Azim Khan, have expressed optimism despite facing initial challenges related to traffic from the Suva side. Khan believes that the system will stabilize and that the return to two-way streets has great potential for local commerce. Dineshwar Raju, the owner of Raju’s Restaurant, has highlighted how the previous one-way system hindered customer access. He is glad to see the two-way traffic returning, stating that traffic flow was smoother before the one-way change.

Nevertheless, alongside these promising developments, some concerns have been raised. Several business owners are struggling with parking availability in the area. Many public meter parking spots have been claimed by taxi bases and illegal taxi operators, significantly limiting space for potential customers. This issue has prompted calls for action from the Nadi Town Council, which holds the responsibility for ensuring the town’s continued growth and vitality.

The addition of a garden and sitting area on the main street, intended to beautify Nadi, has inadvertently reduced parking spaces. As a result, local merchants fear significant losses, as this area could have accommodated up to 324 cars over a nine-hour period if available for parking.

On a positive note, businessman Mubashir Khan remarked on the improved access for customers, particularly to the temple area, which can now be reached more easily from Lautoka thanks to the two-way traffic. The Fiji Roads Authority has encouraged community feedback on this trial initiative, which aims to refine traffic management and enhance experiences for all road users.

Overall, there is a sense of hope that with well-adjusted traffic signals and increased awareness of alternative routes, the distribution of traffic will improve further, mitigating congestion on the main street. As Nadi embraces this significant change, the community remains optimistic that it will lead to a more vibrant and economically flourishing environment, provided that the ongoing parking challenges are addressed effectively.

This revitalization presents a promising opportunity for local commerce to thrive, and collaborative efforts going forward will be essential in maximizing the benefits of this transition.
