Nadi Town is undergoing an exciting transformation as its main street reverts to two-way traffic, a change that local residents and business owners are eagerly embracing. This shift aims to alleviate congestion and enhance accessibility throughout the area.
Local entrepreneurs are optimistic about this development, seeing it as beneficial for their businesses. Mohammed Azim Khan, a local business owner, acknowledged some initial traffic challenges from the Suva side but expressed confidence that the situation will stabilize in the near future. Dineshwar Raju, who runs Raju’s Restaurant, is particularly enthusiastic, pointing out that the previous one-way system posed difficulties for customers. He stressed the importance of effective traffic management given the growing number of vehicles on the road.
Despite the positive aspects of two-way traffic, some businesses have raised concerns about parking availability in the town. They have noted that many public parking spots are monopolized by taxi bases, leaving limited room for their customers. This issue has prompted local merchants to urge the Nadi Town Council to take action to ensure that their businesses can prosper.
The parking dilemma is exacerbated by a landscaped garden and seating area on the main street, which has diminished the number of available parking spaces. While designed to beautify the town, this area reduces customer access and may result in significant financial losses for businesses. For instance, if cars were parked for an average of 20 minutes, the garden could displace as many as 324 cars in just nine hours.
On a positive note, businessman Mubashir Khan noted that the return of two-way traffic has made it easier for customers to access the temple area from Lautoka, enhancing overall connectivity. The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is encouraging community feedback on this traffic trial, with hopes of refining management systems to improve user experience.
There is a sense of hope that with the proper configuration of streetlights and greater awareness of alternative routes, traffic flow will improve, further easing congestion along the main street. As Nadi Town embraces its new traffic configuration, the community remains optimistic that these changes will foster a more vibrant, accessible, and economically prosperous environment.
