The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is set to initiate local area traffic management (LATM) trials in Nadi Town, aiming to reduce traffic congestion, according to FRA Executive Chairman Atunaisa Nayago.
To implement these trials, the FRA’s contractor will conduct demolition and reconstruction works on existing structures in the area to facilitate a redesigned traffic flow. As part of the plan, all traffic signals in Nadi Town will be temporarily deactivated.
Motorists are encouraged to stay alert to these changes and adhere to posted temporary signage while navigating the town. Furthermore, a dedicated traffic management team will be on-site to assist drivers during the three-month trial period.
The timeline for the construction is set from November 23 to December 8, 2024, with the new traffic layout trial commencing on December 8, 2024, and running until March 8, 2025. The following changes in traffic layout are set to take place:
– Queens Road (Main St) will shift to a single lane two-way traffic flow.
– Andrews Road and Raniga Street will also be converted to single lane two-way traffic flow.
– Naitavo Lane will reverse its traffic direction to optimize flow, becoming a single lane one-way street.
– Sahu Khan Lane, Clay Street, and Market Lane will maintain a single lane one-way traffic flow.
These changes aim to enhance road safety and traffic efficiency in Nadi Town, highlighting a proactive approach to tackling congestion. With careful planning and community cooperation, the traffic trials could pave the way for lasting improvements in the area. This initiative represents a positive step towards better urban planning and traffic management in Fiji.
