The Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection has revealed that twenty individuals have been identified as habitual beggars in Nadi town. This announcement came during a meeting with the Nadi Chamber of Commerce, aimed at finding solutions for the growing issue of begging in the area.

Ms. Kiran noted that while some of the identified individuals have previously been integrated back into their families or placed in shelters with the Ministry’s support, they have returned to the streets. She emphasized the need for a more tailored approach to addressing each case individually. The Minister called on local stakeholders to collaborate in restoring dignity and support to those living on the streets.

Additionally, Ms. Kiran highlighted the Ministry’s ongoing review of legislation concerning children and parental neglect, as findings suggest that many vulnerable family members are often abandoned in public spaces or left in hospitals and shelters.

The situation in Nadi echoes concerns raised by local business owners, who have expressed frustration over the disturbances caused by street dwellers. Entrepreneurs like Ashfaaq Khan and Marc McElrath have advocated for a coordinated response from various agencies, including social welfare and health ministries, emphasizing that support for these individuals is essential for community well-being and business sustainability. They point out that without proper intervention, the problem continues to escalate, leading to potential safety concerns for both customers and employees.

The hope remains that through continued dialogue and partnership between businesses, local authorities, and social services, a comprehensive solution can emerge that addresses the needs of vulnerable populations while alleviating the challenges faced by local businesses. This collaborative approach could foster a more compassionate environment, ultimately benefiting the entire community.
