The Nadi Town Council is facing challenges in collecting rates, with outstanding fees totaling $3.4 million, which includes both current dues and arrears. Opposition MP Joseph Nand highlighted that only about $243,000 has been collected in the current financial year, amounting to just 11 percent of the total owed.
During a Parliament session this week, Mr. Nand emphasized that the council’s difficult situation hampers its capacity to provide essential services and fund infrastructure projects. He noted that the council has had to resort to legal action to recover unpaid rates, stressing the necessity of pursuing these matters in court to encourage compliance among ratepayers.
Mr. Nand also pointed out the need for a more proactive approach in communicating with residents about their responsibilities and the importance of making timely payments. He mentioned that residents have expressed concerns over poorly maintained road conditions, calling for the council to prioritize these issues.
He stated that the committee has initiated discussions with the Fiji Roads Authority to seek assistance in upgrading the essential roads for the safety and mobility of the community. Additionally, he highlighted the significance of collaborating with organizations such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Australian Government to ensure the successful implementation of ongoing projects, underscoring the critical role of partnership in addressing these challenges.
