Police are investigating a heartbreaking incident in Nadi following the death of an 18-year-old student who was struck by a vehicle while lying on the roadside early yesterday morning. The young man, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, is believed to have fallen asleep on the street before being hit by a passing vehicle driven by a 43-year-old man.
Emergency services quickly transported the victim to Nadi Hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving. This tragic event has sparked concern among local authorities regarding the dangers of alcohol consumption and road safety.
Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, Director of Traffic for the Fiji Police Force, has strongly advised young individuals to steer clear of roads while intoxicated. He emphasized that being under the influence significantly increases the risk of accidents, particularly for those who may be walking or resting near busy roadways.
As the investigation into the incident continues, the driver involved remains in police custody. This distressing episode serves as a poignant reminder of the potential hazards associated with drinking and the importance of making responsible choices when it comes to road safety.
