Former Fiji 7s captain and Olympic gold medalist Jerry Tuwai has commended the Nadi Junior Rugby Festival, labeling it as one of the finest development platforms in the region as the two-day event reaches its conclusion. The festival has brought together teams from Fiji, Tuvalu, and Nauru, featuring participants from the under-8 to under-18 grades, thereby offering hundreds of young athletes their initial exposure to organized competition and international engagement.
Tuwai emphasized the event’s significance, noting that its effects extend far beyond the actual matches. He expressed his admiration, stating, “I think that World Rugby, Oceania Rugby, Fiji Rugby and all the unions that take part here… this is one of the best rugby festivals that we have right now.” His remarks highlight the festival’s role not just in fostering athletic skills but in instilling essential rugby values that benefit the players both on and off the field.
“It’s not just about rugby, it’s about sharing the values of rugby here today. This is where dreams are moulded. I started with small kites and everything,” Tuwai reflected, indicating the foundational experiences that shaped his successful career. He also pointed out the festival’s broader relevance for the region, asserting that the increasing participation from neighboring Pacific nations will elevate the overall standards of rugby throughout Oceania.
“The initiatives by Oceania Rugby will bolster not only Fiji Rugby but also support other unions participating here today, including those from Nauru, Tuvalu, and several local clubs,” he affirmed. The Nadi Junior Rugby Festival is seen as a pivotal event in nurturing future rugby talents while promoting unity and growth across the Pacific rugby community. The festival concludes this afternoon, marking a significant milestone for young players and the sport’s future in the region.
