Police have announced that they are investigating an incident involving two Virgin Australia crew members in Nadi as an alleged sexual assault. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Crime, Mesake Waqa, clarified that the initial report classified the incident as rape, but it has since been reclassified to ensure a thorough investigation can take place to establish the facts.
Mr. Waqa emphasized that specific legal criteria must be satisfied to label the incident as rape. Investigators are in the process of gathering evidence and examining the circumstances surrounding the case. He noted that, at this point, the claims are still allegations, and the police are prioritizing the investigation.
To date, the police have taken statements from the two crew members, and no charges have been filed. Mr. Waqa assured the public that the investigation is being treated with the utmost seriousness, and the appropriate charges will be determined based on the findings.
In the meantime, Tourism Fiji has chosen not to comment on the allegations involving the two foreigners, who reported they were robbed and raped on New Year’s Day. CEO Brent Hill did acknowledge awareness of the ongoing matter but referred all media inquiries to the Ministry of Tourism, opting to refrain from providing further details.
As the investigation continues, there is limited information available regarding the family members of the affected crew, although sources suggest that a senior airline manager is at the same hotel in Nadi where the crew is staying. Local media have faced challenges in interviewing an airline representative, and police are expected to release more information as the inquiry advances.
This incident highlights the importance of a careful and thorough investigative process in such sensitive matters. As authorities work diligently to uncover the truth, the hope remains that justice will be served while ensuring the rights and dignity of all individuals involved are respected throughout the proceedings.
