The Cabinet has reviewed the Alternative Options Assessment Report regarding the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, conducted by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving multiple stakeholders, including the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Local Government, and the Nadi Town Council, who will work together to investigate funding and implementation strategies for the project.
The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project aims to enhance flood prevention methods and mitigate flood risks by constructing various infrastructure, such as drainage systems, embankments, and a reservoir in Nadi, situated along the lower reaches of the Nadi River.
Over the years, the project has progressed through several phases of planning and conceptual design, identifying both structural and non-structural flood mitigation strategies for the Nadi River basin. It represents Fiji’s most substantial climate resilience effort, poised to minimize economic and social impacts, especially considering Nadi’s critical position within the tourism industry and as a primary entry point for international visitors.
Furthermore, the project aligns with the broader disaster risk resilience objectives established in the National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050, underscoring a commitment to sustainable development and climate adaptation.
In summary, the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project not only aims to protect the community and its economic assets from flooding but also contributes to the long-term sustainability of Fiji’s tourism sector, highlighting a proactive approach to climate resilience and disaster management. This initiative embodies hope for the residents of Nadi and the broader Fijian community, promoting a safer and more prosperous future.
