The Cabinet has recently reviewed the Alternative Options Assessment Report concerning the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, which was developed by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific. Various ministries, including Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Agriculture and Waterways, Lands and Mineral Resources, Local Government, and the Nadi Town Council, will now work on finding funding and implementation strategies for this crucial initiative.
The primary objective of the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project is to enhance flood prevention efforts and reduce the risks of flooding in Nadi town, situated along the lower reaches of the Nadi River. The project entails the construction of critical infrastructure, such as drainage systems, embankments, and a reservoir.
Throughout its development, the project has undergone extensive planning and design phases, which detail both structural and non-structural flood mitigation strategies tailored to the Nadi River basin. Recognized as the largest climate resilience initiative in Fiji, this project aims to mitigate economic and social losses, particularly in light of Nadi’s vital role in the tourism sector as a major gateway for Fiji.
Moreover, the project aligns with the broader goals of disaster risk resilience detailed in the National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050. This comprehensive approach underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding communities from climate-related challenges.
Overall, this initiative not only aims to protect the community but also emphasizes the importance of proactive measures in achieving long-term sustainability in the face of climate change. As stakeholders collaborate on funding and implementation, there is hope that this project will significantly enhance the resilience of Nadi, fostering a safer environment for residents and visitors alike.
