The Cabinet has reviewed the findings from the Alternative Options Assessment Report regarding the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project. This report was developed by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.
Several ministries, including Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Agriculture and Waterways, Lands and Mineral Resources, Local Government, and the Nadi Town Council, will collaborate on discovering funding and implementation strategies for this significant project.
The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project aims to enhance flood prevention and reduce flood risks by constructing crucial infrastructure such as drainage systems, embankments, and a reservoir in Nadi town, which is situated in the lower hinterlands of the Nadi River.
Over the years, the project has gone through various stages of planning and design, focusing on both structural and non-structural strategies for flood mitigation in the Nadi River basin.
This project is recognized as the largest climate resilience initiative in Fiji, designed to minimize economic and social losses, given Nadi’s important role in the tourism sector and as a major gateway for Fiji.
Moreover, it reflects the broader goals of disaster risk resilience articulated in Fiji’s National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050, indicating a strong commitment to building a safer and more resilient future for the region.
In summary, the Cabinet’s proactive measures towards the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project highlight Fiji’s dedication to addressing climate challenges and safeguarding its communities, reinforcing hope for a more resilient future in the face of climate change.
