The Cabinet has reviewed the findings of the Alternative Options Assessment Report concerning the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, executed by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific. Multiple ministries, including the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, and the Ministry of Local Government, alongside the Nadi Town Council, will investigate funding and implementation strategies for this important initiative.
The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project aims to enhance flood prevention methods and minimize flood risks through the establishment of drainage systems, embankments, and reservoirs in Nadi, situated at the lower reaches of the Nadi River. This project is crucial as it has progressed through numerous planning stages and conceptual designs over the years, detailing both structural and non-structural flood mitigation measures for the Nadi River basin.
Recognized as Fiji’s most extensive climate resilience initiative, the project promises to mitigate economic and social hardships in light of Nadi’s pivotal role in the tourism industry and as a primary entry point for the country. Furthermore, it aligns with the strategic disaster risk resilience goals set forth in the National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.
This project not only signifies a substantial investment in infrastructure but also a proactive approach to climate change adaptation, safeguarding the community’s future and reinforcing Fiji’s standing as a key player in the global tourism market. The collaboration among various government bodies further exemplifies a unified effort to address and mitigate environmental challenges.
