The Cabinet has reviewed the findings from the Alternative Options Assessment Report concerning the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, a vital initiative backed by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.
Multiple ministries—including those focused on Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Agriculture and Waterways, Lands and Mineral Resources, and Local Government—along with the Nadi Town Council, will look into various funding and implementation strategies for this significant project.
The objective of the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project is to bolster flood prevention measures and minimize the risk of flooding, which involves the construction of essential infrastructure such as drainage systems, embankments, and reservoirs in the lower areas of the Nadi River.
Over the years, the project has undergone several planning and design phases, detailing both structural and non-structural flood mitigation strategies for the Nadi River basin. This initiative stands as the largest climate resilience project for Fiji, aimed at reducing the potential economic and social repercussions associated with floods, especially since Nadi plays a crucial role in the tourism sector and is a key gateway for Fiji to the global market.
Furthermore, the project aligns with national disaster risk resilience objectives as outlined in the National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and the broader Vision 2050.
This initiative not only highlights the government’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges but also emphasizes the importance of cooperation among various ministries and local authorities. The project promises to improve the resilience of the Nadi region, thus offering hope for a safer and more sustainable future for the community.
In summary, the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project aims to enhance flood prevention efforts, support economic stability, and contribute to the overarching goals of disaster risk management in Fiji.
