The Cabinet has reviewed the findings from the Alternative Options Assessment Report regarding the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, which was conducted by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific. The project aims to enhance flood prevention measures and decrease flood risk for Nadi town, particularly by constructing essential infrastructure such as drainage systems, embankments, and a reservoir, focusing on areas near the Nadi River.
Collaboration among several government bodies, including the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Local Government, and the Nadi Town Council, will continue as they seek out funding and implementation strategies for the project. Over the years, the project has progressed through various stages of planning and design, incorporating both structural and non-structural flood mitigation measures for the wider Nadi River basin.
This initiative stands out as Fiji’s most significant climate resilience project, as it promises to mitigate economic and social losses tied to floods, particularly given Nadi’s critical position in the tourism industry and its role as a primary gateway for Fiji’s international connections. Moreover, the project aligns with the disaster risk resilience goals outlined in the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050, reinforcing the commitment to sustainable development and climate preparedness.
In summary, the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project not only seeks to improve flood management but also highlights the collaborative efforts of various ministries in advancing climate resilience in Fiji. This initiative ultimately paves the way for a safer, more sustainable future for Nadi and its residents, while bolstering the country’s economic stability through enhanced infrastructure.
