The Cabinet has analyzed the results from the Alternative Options Assessment Report regarding the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, a study conducted by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.

In collaboration, the Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics Ministry, Agriculture and Waterways Ministry, Lands and Mineral Resources Ministry, Local Government Ministry, and the Nadi Town Council are set to evaluate funding and implementation strategies for this crucial project.

The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project aims to enhance flood prevention and minimize flood risks by developing key infrastructures such as drainage facilities, embankments, and a reservoir for Nadi Town, situated in the lower reaches of the Nadi River. This initiative is designed to fortify the area against potential flooding, which has been a persistent issue.

Over the years, the project has gone through several phases of planning and design, incorporating various structural and non-structural flood mitigation measures for the Nadi River basin. Remarkably, it stands as Fiji’s largest climate resilience initiative, which is a vital step toward reducing economic and social impacts, particularly given that Nadi plays a significant role in the nation’s tourism industry and serves as a primary entry point for international visitors.

Additionally, the project aligns with the disaster risk resilience objectives outlined in the National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050. This alignment underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing community safety and sustainability in the face of climate challenges.

In summary, the Cabinet’s review of the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project reflects a proactive approach to addressing climate resilience, a vital component for the future of Fiji’s economy and its communities. This commitment not only emphasizes the importance of infrastructure development but also promotes a safer environment for residents and tourists alike, paving the way for sustainable growth.
