A family in Votualevu, Nadi, is facing the devastating impact of homelessness after their three-bedroom house was completely destroyed by fire on Friday morning. The National Fire Authority (NFA) reported receiving the alarm about the fire at approximately 8:39 AM from the Nadi Fire Station.

Fire crews promptly responded, yet by their arrival, the house was already consumed by flames. Firefighters sprang into action quickly, utilizing multiple hose lines and accessing a nearby fire hydrant to bring the fire under control, successfully preventing it from spreading to adjacent homes.

While the property, owned by 58-year-old mechanic Arveen Kumar, suffered severe structural damage estimated at 80%, with financial losses around $80,000, the timely intervention of firefighters ensured that neighboring residences were protected from harm.

Preliminary reports suggest that the homeowner and a tenant were consuming alcohol prior to the incident; however, there were no injuries reported. Joel Israel, the Acting Chief Executive of the National Fire Authority, voiced concerns about the fire, particularly as it occurs during the festive season, and praised the quick actions of the fire crews.

A thorough investigation is being conducted to ascertain the cause of the fire, with the NFA reiterating its appeal for the community to remain vigilant and adhere to fire safety measures, especially in regions outside designated fire boundaries. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of fire safety practices, particularly during times when families gather to celebrate.
