Ratu Baleidreima, a 53-year-old resident of Nadi, is determined to construct a new home that will be resilient against future flooding. Recently, he, along with his wife and five children, was evacuated when floodwaters inundated their house. Currently, they are among those taking refuge at Andrews Primary School in Nadi.

In 2019, Baleidreima purchased a plot of land in the flood-prone Nawaijikuma Settlement in Nawaka, where he built a temporary shelter for his family. Recalling the distress caused by flooding, he expressed that each time there’s a flood, they must seek safety at evacuation centers.

“My greatest hope is to build a house elevated on stilts for my family. Although I have plans in place, my limited income forces me to prioritize my children’s education,” he shared. His eldest child attends Nadi Special School, while his second child is ready to enter high school next year, with three others currently in primary school.

Baleidreima described the urgency of their latest evacuation this past Christmas Day when floodwaters unexpectedly entered their home during lunch. They quickly gathered essential food and belongings before being transported to an evacuation site.

Now, the family awaits the water levels to recede, with Baleidreima planning to return home first to begin the cleanup process.

This story highlights the resilience and determination of families facing the challenges posed by natural disasters. It underscores the importance of building homes that can withstand such turmoil, and the community’s support during these trying times can make a significant difference. There is hope as Baleidreima continues to prioritize his family’s well-being amidst adversity.
