Nadi Council Faces $3.4 Million Rate Collection Crisis

The Nadi Town Council is facing challenges in collecting rates, with outstanding fees totaling $3.4 million, which includes both current dues and arrears.

Opposition MP Joseph Nand highlighted that only $243,000 has been collected in this financial year, accounting for a mere 11 percent of the total amount owed. During a recent parliamentary session, Mr. Nand expressed that the council’s difficult situation significantly hinders its ability to fund essential services and infrastructure projects.

Mr. Nand stated, “The council struggles with rate collection, which has led to reliance on legal action to recover outstanding dues.” He acknowledged the committee’s decision to pursue these matters in court as a necessary step to discourage non-compliance and ensure that all ratepayers fulfill their obligations.

He also stressed the need for a more proactive approach to engage constituents regarding their responsibilities and the necessity of timely payments. Additionally, Mr. Nand mentioned the concerns expressed by Nadi residents about poorly maintained roads and emphasized the importance of collaboration.

“The committee has engaged discussions with the Fiji Roads Authority to address these issues, seeking assistance in upgrading roads that are crucial for the safety and mobility of our community,” he noted.

He further pointed out that partnerships with organizations such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Australian Government are vital for successfully completing ongoing projects. “We emphasize the importance of partnership in addressing these challenges,” he concluded.
