Business owners in Nadi are facing difficulties due to the presence of street dwellers and beggars disrupting their operations. Ashfaaq Khan, managing director of AL-Hamd Smart Living, has highlighted the ongoing issue where his store’s staff frequently have to clean the area in front of the shop, often encountering unpleasant remnants left by the street population.
Khan has called for a collaborative approach to find a lasting solution, recommending that the Nadi Town Council (NTC) facilitate a meeting involving law enforcement, the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Ministry of Health, and various non-governmental organizations. He pointed out the growing number of individuals loitering around shops, some of whom face mental health challenges while others have chosen this lifestyle. The situation escalates when these individuals become confrontational, posing a threat to both staff and shoppers.
Marc McElrath, managing director of Vuvale Restaurants, echoed these concerns, advocating for increased government awareness and support for individuals in need. He suggested that the NTC should assist in securing professional help for these people at facilities like St Giles Hospital.
Businessman Jerry Gounder noted that the council often struggles to address these issues, citing similar challenges within the council complex. The responsibility, he argued, largely rests with social welfare services.
NTC special administrator Salicieli Raiwalui acknowledged the need to address the topic, although attempts to acquire comments from the Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, have gone unanswered.
This situation highlights the critical need for community action and a united approach to support vulnerable individuals while restoring safety and order in commercial areas. There is an opportunity for local leaders to work together to not only address the immediate concerns of businesses but also to enhance social welfare initiatives aimed at assisting those in need.
In summary, while the challenges faced by business owners are significant, there is potential for positive change through collaboration among local authorities, businesses, and social services to create a more supportive environment for everyone involved.
