Residents of Nadi are poised to face increased financial burdens if the proposed rise in electricity tariffs proceeds as outlined. This concern has been voiced by Lawrence Kumar, the President of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who emphasized that local businesses are likely to pass on any additional costs incurred from the tariff hike to consumers.

Kumar pointed out that it is standard practice for businesses to adjust their prices to absorb unexpected costs. He stated, “If there is any external factor or cost that needs to be borne by a business, it will inevitably be passed on to the consumer. No business will absorb these costs without adjusting their service prices.”

The president noted that if the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission proceeds with the proposed increase, residents of Nadi will inevitably face a higher cost of living. He voiced strong opposition from local businesses to the electricity tariff hike, arguing that while the existing rates have remained unchanged for several years, it is unfair to implement a sudden increase without adequate notice or justification.

Kumar expressed concerns regarding transparency, indicating that the public has not been sufficiently informed about the reasons behind the proposed tariff increase. He suggested that any decision regarding the hike should be deferred for further discussion and analysis.

In defense of the proposed increase, Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) explained that the adjustment is necessary to cover operational costs and to facilitate the transition to renewable energy sources. EFL asserted that the tariff increase is designed with vulnerable communities in mind, claiming that ordinary citizens, particularly those consuming lower energy units, would either see minimal increases or no impact at all.

As discussions continue on this significant issue, the potential for an increased cost of living highlights the delicate balance between operational needs for energy providers and the economic realities faced by local residents and businesses.
