The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) is joining forces with the Fiji Police and other stakeholders to enhance safety for residents and tourists in Nadi. This initiative follows concerns raised by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, regarding security, particularly in light of a recent alarming incident where foreign airline employees were reportedly attacked and robbed in the Martintar area.

NCCI President Dr. Ram Raju emphasized the urgent need to bolster security measures in Nadi, highlighting that the recent incidents serve as critical wake-up calls for the community. In meetings with local police, Dr. Raju expressed the importance of providing law enforcement with adequate resources and manpower to prevent future occurrences.

Despite assurances from Deputy Prime Minister Gavoka that the incident was an isolated case, Dr. Raju is adamant that such events can tarnish Fiji’s image and impact its status as a premier tourism destination. He noted that the local business community is becoming increasingly concerned about safety, which is leading to hesitance in making investments. One member of the NCCI has even postponed a significant $10 million development project due to these ongoing security issues.

In addition to crime prevention, Dr. Raju pointed out the ongoing problem of harassment of tourists by certain vendors, which further complicates the tourism experience in Nadi and can deter visitors. He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts between businesses and law enforcement to foster a safer environment.

The proactive stance taken by the NCCI highlights a broader commitment to enhancing public safety while promoting economic development. Through these initiatives, there is optimism that not only can Nadi reclaim its reputation as a safe haven for tourists, but also attract new investments that are vital for the region’s growth.

In summary, the call for improved security and collaborative efforts between local authorities and business leaders presents a hopeful outlook for Nadi, underscoring the vital relationship between safety and economic prosperity. By working together, the community aims to create an environment that assures both residents and visitors of their safety and well-being.
