Former Flying Fijians captain Pita Nacuva, also known as Pita Kewa, has offered crucial advice to the current FIJI Water Flying Fijians as they prepare for their July Tests, particularly the upcoming match against the Wallabies next week. According to Nacuva, the focus should be on mastering the basics of rugby, which he simplified into three essential areas: position, possession, and pace.

Nacuva, who led Fiji against the All Blacks in 1980, emphasized the importance of being mindful of one’s positioning, the ability to secure possession of the ball, and maintaining the right pace during play. He stated, “They’re starting about pace, they’re not talking about the position. They’re very careful with their position, the way they catch the ball and run.” He stressed to the players that understanding these basics is vital for effective performance in a high-stakes game against the Wallabies, whom Fiji previously defeated in a pool stage match at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

In addition to technical advice, Nacuva reminded the players of the significance of service and commitment when wearing the national jersey. He encouraged new players to approach the game with a mindset of serving their team and country to the best of their abilities, drawing from his diverse experience in rugby, volleyball, and government.

As the Flying Fijians face the Wallabies at 3:30 PM next Saturday in Newcastle, Australia, they hope to build on their previous victory. Nacuva highlighted the responsibility of each player to understand their specific roles within the team, reinforcing that success hinges on executing these foundational principles.

With the combination of seasoned players and newcomers fully embracing the values of teamwork and resilience, there is optimism that Fiji’s spirited approach will shine through in their performance against the Wallabies, promising an entertaining display for fans of Fijian rugby.

This article illustrates the hope and determination within the team as they prepare for an important series of matches, showcasing the potential for Fijian rugby to thrive on an international level.
