Former Fijiana 7s player Ivamere Nabura is progressing towards her goal of joining the Fijian Drua women’s team for the upcoming Super W season. Since the Drua women’s team was established three years ago, Nabura has been aspiring to wear their jersey and is dedicated to making that aspiration a reality.
The native of Nakorosule, Naitasiri, had a standout season with Suva Women’s rugby, helping them retain the Marama Championship title, which marks a significant step towards her goal. She has been selected for the Vodafone Fijiana XV squad of 30 players for the Tests against Scotland and the Netherlands this month, being one of four uncapped players included.
“I am part of the women’s high-performance unit, training and working hard to fulfill this dream,” Nabura stated in an interview. “I’ve already worn the Fijiana 7s jersey, and my goal this season is to be part of the Fijian Drua women’s team when the squad is announced.”
At 23 years old, Nabura, who was named Suva women’s rugby’s best backline player of the year, recognizes that talent alone will not secure her a place on the Drua team. “Many young girls are vying for a spot in the Drua. For me, it’s about surrounding myself with the right people who support my ambitions,” she explained. “Additionally, I need to step out of my comfort zone, train hard, and go the extra mile so that I can stand out during trials.”
Rugby seems to be a family tradition for Nabura, with her father and older brothers also being involved in the sport. Her brothers include former Silktails and Fiji Warriors player Meli Nabura and former Highlanders’ player Tevita Nabura. While her brothers support her rugby ambitions, her mother, Marica Nai, has been less enthusiastic about her choice to play.
“My parents have been the backbone of my rugby journey. Despite the negativity surrounding women’s rugby, they’ve stood by me, encouraging me to ignore the critics and pursue my dreams,” Nabura said.
Nabura, who also has family ties to Nadroga, is thankful for the chance to represent Fiji on the international stage once more.
