Youths in Nabua have been reportedly tampering with surveillance cameras installed at Public Rental Board (PRB) flats along Mead Rd, as highlighted by the general manager, Timoci Naleba. He explained that these cameras had been compromised, raising significant concerns about the safety and security of residents in the area.
Naleba’s comments came on the heels of a recent incident involving drug discovery at one of the flats, prompting PRB to rethink their security measures. “We are planning to either rebuild or revamp the security systems because the old design is outdated. PRB is innovating and redesigning to better meet current needs,” he stated, also noting that newer estates are already incorporating enhanced security features.
Despite these challenges, Naleba emphasized the need for greater awareness regarding the importance of surveillance technology, indicating that community education is vital for altering mindsets around security. He acknowledged the financial burden of replacing these cameras, noting that while the cameras themselves are not expensive, the costs associated with reinstallation have been considerable. “We have had to replace them twice. It’s costly for PRB to keep reinstalling, especially when people aren’t cooperating with us,” he said, but remained optimistic about improving overall security.
Furthermore, Minister for Housing Maciu Naulumisa mentioned in a statement that the tenancy agreements clearly prohibit behaviors such as drug use and alcohol consumption, asserting that tenants violating these terms risk eviction. However, he underscored the importance of not just focusing on eviction, but also on raising awareness about these issues among residents. Monthly visits and meetings have been conducted to educate tenants, alongside strategically installing surveillance cameras in high-risk areas. Naulumisa also called for better collaboration between the PRB and the police to manage security effectively.
This situation highlights an ongoing challenge that extends beyond the PRB flats, as drug use and related issues persist throughout the country. However, with planned reforms to security systems and continued community engagement, there is hope for a safer living environment for all residents involved.
The commitment from both PRB management and government officials signals a proactive approach to tackling these issues, which could lead to a more secure and supportive community in Nabua.
