Nabua Secondary School made a significant impact at the Suva Zone Two athletics competition, starting off strong with a gold medal victory in the sub-junior girls’ 1500 meters event, led by athlete Salanieta Vakaloloma. Coach Winston Rounds expressed his excitement about this achievement, describing it as a wonderful kick-off for the school’s ambitions in the tournament.
Rounds emphasized that while the victory is commendable, their primary focus is on qualifying for the upcoming Fiji Finals scheduled for next month. “The main goal for the zone is to try to qualify for the zone. That’s the main concern; I’m not overly fixated on placements; my priority is for them to qualify,” he explained.
Despite the tough competition from respected institutions like Marist Brothers High School and Suva Grammar School, Rounds encourages his athletes to relish the challenge and enjoy their participation. His aim is to cultivate a positive atmosphere as they strive to reach their objectives.
This success story reflects the broader trend of school athletics in Fiji, where various zones are dedicated to promoting increased participation and a competitive spirit. Recent developments in the educational sector have shown a commitment to nurturing young talent, with schools supporting their athletes and fostering a motivating environment geared toward achievement.
As the day continues, Nabua Secondary School is hopeful about winning additional medals, showcasing the potential of its young competitors while contributing to the vibrant scene of the ongoing athletics season. The future appears bright for all participants, filled with opportunities for growth and success.
