Residents and business owners near the Nabua bus stop are expressing their frustration over ongoing drainage and sanitation problems that have been disrupting their daily lives. The situation has led to unpleasant odors and frequent flooding, which are hampering the operations of local vendors and potentially threatening public health.
Market vendors and retail employees have reported that the foul smell emanates from nearby drains, intensifying during rainy weather. Elisha Dayal, a retail employee, highlighted the impact of the flooding on their business, noting that heavy rains often lead to water from the drain entering their shop. “Not only us but all the shops have been going through that,” Dayal stated, emphasizing that this has been a shared struggle among all local businesses in Nabua.
The complaints amplify as market vendor Vutaieli Tokalaulevu pointed out that the odor has worsened over time, becoming unbearable. “The drain seems to be causing the smell, especially when it’s windy, and it reaches right inside the market,” Tokalaulevu remarked. Residents have noted that the stench lingers for long periods, making it difficult to work and shop in the area.
A concerned local claimed that the smell becomes intolerable, urging authorities to investigate the drainage system and sewage issues impacting multiple buildings. “They have to check the drainage; we do not know when they will come down to have a look at that,” the resident commented.
Despite repeated complaints to the Suva City Council, affected individuals report that their concerns have yet to receive a response. As the community rallies for immediate action to address both the drainage and sanitation crises, they seek solutions that protect their livelihoods and improve the overall public health of the area. The local sentiment remains hopeful that the appropriate authorities will take notice and implement the necessary changes to resolve these persistent issues.
