The blue discoloration that appeared in Nabua Creek two weeks ago was due to the release of dye into the waterway. This unusual sight quickly captured public attention, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into the pollution’s source.
Seru Soderberg, the Chief Executive Officer of the Water Authority of Fiji, confirmed that tests conducted on water samples from the creek confirmed the presence of dye. He emphasized the importance of avoiding the disposal of dyes or similar chemical substances into the sewage system. Such substances can be detrimental to the beneficial bacteria essential for waste decomposition during sewage treatment.
Soderberg further highlighted the urgency of this issue, noting that Fiji’s sewerage infrastructure is already aging. The introduction of harsh chemicals can significantly accelerate its deterioration, posing a risk to the environment and public health.
The water authority’s call to action serves as a crucial reminder for both the public and businesses to be responsible stewards of local waterways, ensuring that such incidents do not occur in the future. By fostering a culture of environmental consciousness, the community can work towards preserving the natural beauty and health of their surroundings.
