The Nabua Broncos women’s rugby league team achieved a remarkable victory against the Lami Steelers, winning 4-0 in the Fiji National Rugby League Women’s (FNRLW) competition, held at Bidesi grounds in Suva. Team manager Maika Koroi highlighted the significance of the win, praising the players’ growth and potential in their inaugural season.

Koroi expressed gratitude for what he termed divine intervention, noting that many of the players are secondary school students who are experiencing rugby league for the first time. “There’s a big improvement from their first game to this game. They managed to hold off the Lami Steelers from scoring, which is commendable,” he stated, indicating the team’s progress.

The dedicated players travel significant distances to practice, with some coming from as far as Korovou in Tailevu, exemplifying their commitment to the sport. Koroi also emphasized the need for sponsorship, as the team’s biggest challenge has been the lack of proper kit and resources. Despite these challenges, there is hope on the horizon, with two players having been scouted for the Bulikula squad following their match.

This encouraging performance aligns with the broader trend of increasing participation and success in women’s rugby in Fiji, as highlighted by the recent growth in teams and initiatives supporting young female athletes. As the Nabua Broncos continue to develop and learn, they are part of a bright future for women’s rugby in Fiji, inspiring a new generation of players and signaling increasing support for women’s sports in the region.
