Nabouwalu’s Homestay Success: From Cyclone Recovery to Thriving Business

Spread the love

Lote’s Homestay in Namulomulo, Nabouwalu, Bua, is booming, attracting a large number of visitors during the festive season. Owner Alipate Radrodro, a former hotel employee, shared that more than 100 guests took advantage of the accommodations during December last year, which included staff from various government agencies and NGOs.

The homestay was established following the devastation of Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020, starting with Save the Children Fiji as its first customers who stayed for three months to conduct post-cyclone assessments. With a background as a Business Development Manager at Holiday Inn Suva, Radrodro saw the opportunity to create a stable future for his family through this venture. He transformed his family home into the homestay, which now provides 17 guest spaces across three houses, charging $100 per person per night for both breakfast and dinner.

Radrodro highlighted the importance of support from his family, particularly his wife, in this journey. The homestay, which stands as the only accommodation provider in Nabouwalu, has received positive reviews and is conveniently located near Nabouwalu Jetty, attracting ferry passengers seeking shelter during delays.

Additionally, Radrodro capitalized on his success by launching a vehicle rental business in 2023, managing 13 vehicles, including a minibus that services the Nabouwalu-Labasa corridor. He credits his homestay for enabling the establishment of the rental business.

Looking ahead, he has ambitious plans for expansion, intending to build a swimming pool, bar, and restaurant as part of a significant upgrade to the homestay, estimated to cost around $1 million. This initiative aims to create jobs for 15 people. Radrodro has also secured beachfront land from local landowners to provide additional accommodations, blending the charm of a homestay with the luxury of a boutique beachfront hotel experience.

His vision for growth and innovation, driven by optimism, is set to rejuvenate the local tourism landscape in Nabouwalu.

This story is a testament to resilience and entrepreneurship, showcasing how one individual’s efforts can contribute to community development and the local economy. As Lote’s Homestay continues to thrive, it sets a positive example for others navigating challenges to embrace opportunities for growth and success.
