A team of secondary school players from Naboutini made a remarkable achievement at the Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s 2024 tournament, claiming victory in the Shield Final against home team Bainivualiku Vatulele with a score of 24-7. This young squad, hailing from Naboutini Village in Serua, entered the tournament not just to compete but also to steer their players away from the dangers of illicit drug use.
Coach Setefano Naitonicagi expressed his joy after the match, emphasizing the team’s gratitude. “Firstly, we would like to thank God for the win today and for safeguarding us from injuries,” he said. Naitonicagi underscored the team’s foundation, which aims to provide an alternative path for youth, focusing on sports rather than drugs.
The team’s preparation included camping at the Naboutini Village Hall and training at the scenic Sigatoka Sand Dunes, which fostered teamwork and camaraderie. Naitonicagi believes that winning the Shield is just the beginning. He expressed his intention to lead the team to more tournaments during the school holidays, fostering further growth and development.
He also voiced appreciation for the support from villagers and fans, whose prayers and encouragement were instrumental in their success. This victory not only signifies a win in a tournament but represents a step toward positive community engagement and youth empowerment.
In a world where many youths are susceptible to negative influences, this team’s dedication to sports and healthy activities offers hope and inspiration. Their journey demonstrates how sports can be a powerful tool for personal development, community spirit, and steering youth towards a brighter future.
