Nabouciwa Village Opens Disaster-Ready Evacuation Center in Fiji

The community of Nabouciwa Village in Tailevu is rejoicing as it marks a significant enhancement to its disaster resilience and living standards with the inauguration of a new evacuation center and ablution block. The facilities, officially opened by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, are set to provide villagers with secure shelter and improved sanitation during emergency situations.

This initiative, which cost $101,652.84, comprises the Nabouciwa Village Evacuation Center valued at $52,359.43 and a modern Ablution Block at $49,293.41. The funding was provided by the Ministry, with construction facilitated through a partnership involving CCD Carpenters and local villagers who offered their labor.

During the opening ceremony, Minister Ditoka underscored the Fijian government’s unwavering commitment to fortifying disaster preparedness within rural communities. “These facilities not only serve as a refuge during cyclones but also reflect our continuous endeavor to build resilient, sustainable, and inclusive communities across Fiji,” he stated.

Village representative Lusia Mateni from the Soqosoqo Vakamarama of Nabouciwa expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry and the Coalition Government for their support. She highlighted that the new structures replace a dilapidated community hall constructed in 1972, which had suffered extensive damage from storms over the years. Mateni noted that these new facilities have brought “pure joy” to the 34 households in the village, allowing families to have peace of mind while also improving access to clean water and proper sanitation, which are critical for both everyday living and disaster preparedness.

The development in Nabouciwa aligns with broader efforts across Fiji to enhance disaster preparedness in rural areas. Similar projects, such as those in Naivakacau and Daku Villages, have also seen the establishment of evacuation centers to bolster community resilience. These initiatives signify a concerted approach by the government to ensure that no Fijian community is left vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and natural disasters.

The establishment of such facilities is more than just infrastructure; it symbolizes hope and a proactive stance against the increasing threats posed by environmental challenges. As communities like Nabouciwa celebrate these advancements, there is a growing optimism that enhanced disaster resilience will empower them to respond to emergencies more effectively in the future.
