Progress continues on the Nabavatu Village Relocation project, with significant advancements despite setbacks due to adverse weather. During a recent Parliament session, Minister for Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka announced that contractors Engineering Express Ltd have successfully completed civil works for 37 homes as part of the multimillion-dollar initiative aimed at secure housing for families displaced by Tropical Cyclone Ana in January 2021.

The project, which carries an estimated budget of approximately $5.9 million, is structured in four main phases to facilitate a smooth transition from the current vulnerable site to a safer, permanent location at Nadoiviri. Currently, work is in Phase Two, focusing on the construction of homes and essential infrastructure. Minister Ditoka highlighted the importance of foundational civil works that include drainage upgrades, road access improvements, and water access systems, crucial for making the new community sustainable and resilient.

The timber for construction is sourced responsibly, with consent from local landowning mataqali, underscoring a commitment to traditional practices and community involvement. The third phase will address community infrastructure enhancements, such as footpaths and footbridges, designed to improve accessibility and quality of life for residents. Furthermore, the fourth phase will ensure that all construction meets compliance standards through thorough reviews by engineers.

This relocation project not only aims to resolve immediate housing needs but also demonstrates a broader commitment to enhancing disaster resilience within the community. Support from governmental and international partners, including the Climate Relocation of Communities Trust Fund, has been critical in driving this initiative forward.

The optimism surrounding the project is palpable, as families who have endured challenging living conditions for four years eagerly await their new homes. This initiative serves as a vital step toward stability and recovery for the Nabavatu community, reflecting resilience, determination, and a hopeful vision for a better future.
