A groundbreaking ceremony is set to take place in Nabavatu, Dreketi, marking the third event for the village’s relocation project aimed at providing permanent homes for its residents. This initiative comes in response to the devastating impact of Tropical Cyclone Ana, which severely affected the village in January 2021, displacing 38 families who have since been living in tents.
Minister for Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu announced that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is expected to lead the ceremony upon his return from overseas. This project has seen various governmental leaders involved, with the first ceremony conducted by former Minister Inia Seruiratu and the second by his successor Sakiasi Ditoka.
Originally slated to commence construction on 37 new homes on January 20, the initiative faced delays. Minister Bulitavu clarified that climate change funds were allocated to the Rural Development Ministry, which is the designated agency for this project. The tender for construction was awarded to Engineering Express Ltd, with the contract signing held on Monday.
The total allocation for this relocation effort stands at $5.9 million from the Relocation of the Communities Trust Fund. Bulitavu emphasized the need for the executing agents to adhere to fund conditions, including stringent accounting practices, before proceeding to the next phase of financing.
Residents of Nabavatu have endured harsh living conditions since Cyclone Ana, experiencing difficulties such as exposure to the elements in makeshift tents.
