Nabavatu Relocation Housing Progress as Community Prepared for Move-In

The construction of new homes for the Nabavatu community is progressing steadily at their relocation site, almost five years after a catastrophic landslide forced the villagers to leave their homes in 2020. According to Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima, there are plans for a total of 37 houses, with 16 set to reach beam level by the end of November, while four homes have already been completed to that stage. Roofing work is scheduled to commence in December.

Currently, 11 homes have advanced to the flooring stage with some already engaged in block laying, and they are anticipated to reach beam level by June 2026. The relocation process has faced challenges, particularly concerning the need to secure safe and appropriate land along with fulfilling geological and safety assessments by relevant agencies, as explained by Rainima. He emphasized the importance of patience and cooperation from the community as the construction work progresses.

Addressing safety during the cyclone season is a priority for authorities, which have established evacuation plans for Maramarua School and the newly upgraded church at the temporary site. In the meantime, the Relocation Unit, with assistance from GIZ, is providing non-food relief supplies to families still residing in temporary shelters as they await their new homes.

Officials reaffirm their commitment to ensuring the timely completion of the project and handing over the finished houses to the affected families. Headman Moriti Kaiwaqawa expressed the challenges faced by villagers who have been living in tents since the disaster, yet he noted a renewed sense of hope as construction resumes after prior delays due to heavy rainfall.

The resilience of the Nabavatu community, who have endured years of uncertainty, shines through as they look forward to moving into their new homes and restoring normalcy in their lives. This progression is not only a crucial step toward providing stable housing but also symbolizes the community’s perseverance and hope for a brighter future. With continued support from the government and various partners, the path toward recovery and stability is becoming increasingly visible on the horizon.
