Nabala Secondary School, the sole institution with a drum band in Fiji’s Northern Division, has finally received much-needed upgrades to its musical equipment after a lengthy 16-year wait.
The school’s music program benefited from an $8,000 donation from the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee, which included four single drums, one brass drum, and a set of four tenor drums.
Principal Epi Raikivi expressed his excitement and gratitude on behalf of the school’s 14-member drum band, which consists of hostel students from Years Nine to 13, representing 11 different villages. “In 2008, the Fiji Police Force generously donated their drum set to our school, and since that time, we have been repairing and reusing it,” said Mr. Raikivi.
He also recognized Master Seru Tuidravutu, who has been with the band since 2012, for his efforts in securing assistance from the festival committee. “The band has participated in the festival entertainment group for five years,” added Mr. Raikivi. Although the teacher resigned earlier this year, his guidance was crucial in acquiring the necessary equipment.
Situated about 33 kilometers from Labasa Town, the band, dressed in light blue and navy blue uniforms, frequently performs at various schools, organizations, and community events.
Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s commitment to fostering community engagement and music education. “This donation reflects our dedication to community development, skill enhancement, and support for music education,” Ms. Ibrahim noted. She mentioned that the festival had previously donated $5,000 worth of equipment last year, with an additional $3,000 in this recent donation as part of their ongoing commitment.
