Nabala Secondary School’s Drum Band Strikes a Chord with New Gear!

Nabala Secondary School, the sole institution with a drum band in the Northern Division, has received a long-overdue update to its musical equipment after 16 years.

The $8,000 contribution includes four single drums, one brass drum, and a set of four tenor drums, donated by the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee.

Principal Epi Raikivi conveyed his enthusiasm and appreciation on behalf of the 14-member band, which consists of hostel students from Years Nine to 13 representing 11 villages.

“In 2008, the Fiji Police Force donated their drum set to our school, and we have been repairing and using it ever since,” said Mr. Raikivi. He also recognized Master Seru Tuidravutu for his dedication to the band since 2012, who facilitated assistance from the festival committee.

“The band has been part of the festival entertainment lineup for five years,” Mr. Raikivi added. Although the teacher resigned earlier this year, his influence was crucial in obtaining the essential equipment.

Nabala Secondary School is located about 33 kilometers from Labasa Town. The band, clad in light blue and navy uniforms, regularly supports performances for other schools, organizations, and community events.

Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s commitment to community enhancement and music education.

“This donation highlights our commitment to community development, skill enhancement, and support for music education,” Ms. Ibrahim stated. She also noted the festival’s previous donation of $5,000 in equipment last year, followed by an additional $3,000 in their latest support as part of their ongoing commitment.
