Nabala Secondary School, the only institution in the Northern Division with a drum band, has received an important upgrade to its musical equipment after 16 years. The donation, valued at $8,000, includes four single drums, one brass drum, and a set of four tenor drums, provided by the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee.
Principal Epi Raikivi expressed his excitement and gratitude on behalf of the school’s 14-member band, which consists of hostel students from Year Nine to Year 13, representing 11 villages. “In 2008, the Fiji Police Force donated their drum set to our school, and since that time, we have been repairing and reusing it,” Mr. Raikivi stated.
He also recognized Master Seru Tuidravutu, who has been a part of the band since 2012 and played a key role in seeking assistance from the festival committee. “The band has been an integral part of the festival entertainment group for five years,” he noted. Although the teacher resigned earlier this year, his leadership was crucial in obtaining the much-needed equipment for the band.
Located about 33 kilometers from Labasa Town, the band, dressed in light blue and navy blue uniforms, often performs to support other schools, organizations, and community events.
Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s dedication to community and music education. “This donation emphasizes our commitment to community development, skill enhancement, and supporting music education,” Ms. Ibrahim remarked. She also mentioned that the festival had previously donated $5,000 worth of equipment last year, along with an additional $3,000 in their latest contribution as part of their ongoing support.
