Nabala Secondary School’s Drum Band Hits a High Note with New Gear!

Nabala Secondary School, the only institution with a drum band in the Northern Division, has finally upgraded its musical equipment after a lengthy period of 16 years. The upgrade, valued at $8,000, includes four single drums, one brass drum, and one set of four tenor drums, courtesy of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee.

Principal Epi Raikivi expressed his excitement and gratitude on behalf of the school’s 14-member band, which comprises hostel students from Years Nine to 13 representing 11 different villages. “In 2008, the Fiji Police Force donated their drum set to our school, and since then, we have been repairing and reusing it,” Mr. Raikivi stated.

He also acknowledged the contributions of Master Seru Tuidravutu, a long-time member of the band since 2012, for his efforts in seeking help from the festival committee. “The band has participated in the festival entertainment group for five years,” Mr. Raikivi noted. Although the teacher resigned earlier this year, his leadership played a crucial role in obtaining the much-needed equipment.

Located approximately 33 kilometers from Labasa Town, the band, outfitted in light blue and navy blue uniforms, regularly performs at various schools, organizations, and community events.

Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s commitment to fostering community and music education. “This donation highlights our dedication to community development, skill enhancement, and support for music education,” Ms. Ibrahim remarked. She added that the festival had provided $5,000 worth of equipment last year, alongside the latest donation of $3,000 worth of equipment as part of their ongoing commitment to the school.
